Why We Air Roast

Let's first say that there is no right or wrong way to roast coffee beans; we just prefer the air roasting method.

An air roaster, also known as a fluid bed roaster, offers several advantages over other types of roasters, such as drum roasters. Here are some reasons why an air roaster is considered advantageous:

Even Roasting: Air roasters use a powerful stream of hot air to agitate the coffee beans during the roasting process. This ensures that the beans are evenly exposed to heat and results in a more uniform roast. In contrast, drum roasters rely on the beans' rotation within a drum, which may lead to uneven heat distribution and inconsistent roasting.

Faster Roasting: Air roasters typically roast coffee beans more quickly compared to other methods. The forced hot air circulation enables rapid heat transfer, reducing the overall roasting time. This can be beneficial for maintaining the coffee's flavor and aroma by minimizing the time for which it is exposed to heat.

Precise Temperature Control: Air roasters offer precise control over the roasting temperature. By adjusting the airflow and temperature settings, roasters can fine-tune the process to achieve desired flavor profiles. This level of control allows for experimentation and customization, enabling roasters to bring out specific characteristics in the coffee beans.

Cleaner Roasting Environment: Air roasters have built-in chaff collectors that efficiently remove the husk or chaff that is released during roasting. This helps maintain a cleaner roasting environment, reducing the accumulation of debris and making the cleaning process easier.

Reduced Smoke Production: Air roasters generate less smoke compared to drum roasters. The forced air circulation helps carry away the smoke and exhaust gases, resulting in a cleaner roasting experience. This can be particularly advantageous for home or small-scale roasters where smoke ventilation might be a concern.

Small Footprint: Air roasters are often compact and take up less space compared to drum roasters. This makes them suitable for home or small-scale coffee roasting operations where space may be limited.

It's worth noting that different roasting methods have their own unique advantages and considerations. Ultimately, the choice of roaster depends on the preferences of the roaster and the desired outcome for the coffee beans.
